prAna’s sales grew at a compound annual growth rate of more than 30 percent between 2010 and 2013, and prAna was acquired by Columbia Sportswear Company (CSC) in June, 2014. prAna is now part of the family of brands in the Columbia portfolio, including Mountain Hardwear, Sorel and Montrail. prAna is headquartered in Carlsbad, California and operate as a wholly owned subsidiary of Columbia Sportswear Company, with Russ Hopcus as Brand President.


Overview of the Position:

As a member of our global design and merchandising team, the Associate Designer works closely with the divisional product line and category designers to ensure the aesthetic vision of style concepts are executed to meet line plan needs, quality standards and product development calendar timelines. He/she helps create and complete first prototype technical packages and updates bill of materials throughout the development phase. The Associate Designer attends all key milestone product creation, design team meetings as well as fit sessions and coordinates necessary follow up. The Associate Designer partners with the Color Specialist, Material developers and Print and Graphics teams to ensure lab dip work, fabric development and CAD art is completed on time. In addition, the Associate compiles, maintains and updates the label packages, trims, components and finishing database to ensure prAna standards are met.

The Associate Designer initiates and prepares relevant design materials for Designer presentations and are a main point of contact for all product information inquiries in the absence of the designer.  

  • Complete tasks and prioritize responsibilities to adhere to lead times and development calendar
  • Techpack completion, Accuracy of all design, attributes, factory, pricing, material and color details
  • Accurate record keeping of all seasonal style adjustments
  • Effective coordination, management and completion of assigned responsibilities and/or product design projects
Key Interfaces:

Position has frequent interaction with many areas within prAna, necessitating excellent communication and relationship-building skills. This position has deep working relationships with the following constituencies:

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Compile, organize, file and record seasonal trend and market research
  • Update and maintain accuracy of line drawings and product detail information
  • Help Designers complete additional detail sketches for techpacks
  • Work with Design Assistant to ensure initial techpacks and style numbers are set up
  • Partner with Designer to create and complete 1st proto techpacks
  • Manage updates of Bill of Material information throughout development
  • Support Designers to complete garment color components (thread color recommendations etc)
  • Update line drawings, CADs, techpacks to reflect FIT session adjustments, style detail changes
  • Participate in fittings to record and document all design/aesthetic related changes
  • Communicate and coordinate needed follow up to keep on calendar
  • With Designer, review 1st protos and SMS to identify, record and communicate discrepancies
  • With Designer, sweep web and catalog imagery for depiction accuracy, communicate needed changes
  • Ensure timely communication of color requests to colorist for lab dipping
  • Maintain seasonal sketch/body library in Illustrator or other program
  • Verify design CAD drawing proportion and sketch standards; correct as needed
  • Facilitate generation and maintenance of trim, logo and style guide visual matrix
  • Support prAna product team in the creation of presentation and visual tools for sales meetings, seasonal kick-off meetings, pre-lines or in house dealer presentations
  • Meet all design and product development calendar deadlines

Education and Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in fashion design and 3+ years of design experience in the apparel industry highly preferred (M’s and/or W’s)
  • Strong command of Adobe Illustrator.
  • Proficiency in  Adobe Photoshop,  Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PLM systems
  • Experience with 3D tools and Textile development software (Browzwear, Generation Digital, Ned Graphics) helpful
  • Strong understanding of diverse fabrications and garment finishing construction, synthetic and sustainable fibers
  • Knowledge of printing, dyeing and finishing techniques
  • Relentless attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet and maintain schedules
  • Proven track record of delivering product concepts that meet customer expectations and business objectives
  • Possesses high level of ownership, looks at challenges with a positive attitude
  • Demonstrates passion and commitment to improving the customer’s experience
  • Ability to be productive in an open, ever changing, fast paced environment
  • Demonstrates initiative, is conscientious and provides complete follow-through on areas of responsibility
  • Excellent verbal, written and visual communication/presentation skills
  • Portfolio a must
  • Yoga, Swim, Fitness, Outdoor, Climbing or other athletic passion and experience a plus
  • References upon request 

Technical Skills:

  • Excellent illustrator flat technical sketching skills
  • Excellent color senseMunsell color test results helpful
  • Must possess expert troubleshooting skills
  • Strong written, verbal, and graphical communications skills with the ability to express complex technical concepts effectively
  • Ability to work well with people from different disciplines with varying degrees of technical experience
  • Ability to work both independently and with minimal guidance, as well as with a team

Travel Requirements:

  • Possible International travel
