Columbia Sportswear Company, Portland, Oregon, Apparel Quality Engineer, Duties:  Ensure apparel and accessory products meet and exceed consumer expectations and governmental regulations by applying prevention-based quality tools. Provide quality expertise from product concept through commercialization, collaborating with Design, Development and Raw Materials Teams to ensure potential product defects are identified and prevented. Analyze defective returns, voice of consumer data, factory/vendor capabilities, performance history, and testing data. Collaborate with Material and Trims Quality Teams throughout seasonal development to execute Failure Mode Effects Analysis (FMEA) prevention-based tools that correspond directly to styles and materials/trims. Deploy Root Cause Analysis for highly complex quality failures. Make quality assurance and vendor selection recommendations. Analyze internal quality failures to determine trends and gaps in knowledge and/or processes. Liaise between Design and Development Teams and Asia liaison office Quality Engineers/Auditors before start of bulk production. Promote “Right first time” culture during product creation and quality best practices with Product Development, Design, Merchant and Materials Teams. Facilitate development of Finished Garment Standards and Test Plans. Communicate internal quality failures to all stakeholders promoting continuous improvement skills and practices. Mentor Quality Assurance and product creation teams on Total Quality management and garment quality engineering techniques and practices. Approximately 4 weeks of international travel required annually.

Education:        Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or related field (foreign equivalent accepted);


Experience:       6 years' post-bachelor's progressive experience as Quality Assurance Manager, Production Analyst, or similar position. 

6 years' experience:
  1. Working with overseas apparel production facilities;
  2. Adopting and implementing lean-six sigma tools, and Quality Assurance tools and practices in apparel manufacturing; 
  3. Conducting Plan–Do–Check–Act (PDCA) and Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) with cross functional departments for product risk evaluation, and issue resolution improvements;
  4. Working with manufacturing department of global apparel company, applying manufacturing expertise in all aspects of apparel manufacturing and processes;
  5. Working with various fabric characteristics and end use, analyzing multiple approaches to solve fabric related technical challenges;
  6. Using ASTM, ISO and GB standards for apparel product testing and validation;
  7. Determining appropriate pattern adjustments to meet required fit and/or aesthetics;
  8. Identifying and executing product ‘Critical to Quality’/’Critical to Process’ during product development;
  9. Utilizing Intuit/Quick base and Excel to analyze statistical data; and
  10. Presenting “voice of customer” data, product failure root causes, and innovative manufacturing techniques to internal managers and subject-matter experts.
